The gregorian chant
Being one of the most ancient musical traditions of the Western World, gregorian chant constitutes a form of sung prayer. Gregorian chant was initially based upon an ancient Mediterranean liturgical tradition that faced a considerable evolution over the first centuries AD. Although popular belief credited Pope Gregory I (Gregory the Great, 540-604) with having personally invented gregorian chant, researchers believe that its greatest evolution occurred much later, during the first decades of the Carolingian Empire (800–888): the splendid mixture of the Gallican liturgy with the antique Roman one resulted in the modern Roman liturgy – also known as gregorian liturgy – comprising the gregorian chant. The revival of gregorian chant in our days, along with the associate modern academic research, started in the 19th century.
